Deloitte Interview Process Overview

The Deloitte recruitment process moves candidates through aptitude testing, one or more interviews, and an assessment centre. Understanding each stage — and what it specifically assesses — lets you allocate preparation time correctly.

Stage 1

SHL Online Tests

Numerical, Verbal, Inductive — the first filter. See our Deloitte aptitude guide.

Stage 2

Immersive Online Assessment (IOA)

Scenario-based simulation. Values and judgment tested.

Stage 3

Virtual / Recorded Interview

Competency and motivational questions. Structured STAR format expected.

Stage 4

Assessment Centre

Partner interview + group exercise + case study. Full-day event.

💡
Aptitude tests come before interviews — pass those first

No matter how strong your interview preparation is, you won't reach the interview stage without passing Deloitte's online aptitude tests. See our Deloitte aptitude guide and free practice tests before focusing on interview prep.

Competency & Behavioural Questions

These questions ask you to evidence past behaviour as a predictor of future performance. Use the STAR framework — Situation, Task, Action, Result — and keep answers to 2–3 minutes unless probed further.

Question 1Leadership / Teamwork
"Tell me about a time you led a team through a challenging project."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Interviewers want evidence of ownership — not just participation. Use STAR. Emphasise how you motivated others, resolved conflict, or adapted plans. Deloitte values 'collaborative impact' — show how the outcome benefited more than just your team.
Question 2Delivering at pace
"Describe a situation where you had to manage competing priorities under pressure."
What they're assessing & how to answer
This tests self-management and judgment under pressure. Be specific about the tradeoffs you made and why. Avoid implying you simply 'worked harder' — show structured decision-making.
Question 3Analytical thinking
"Give me an example of when you identified a problem others had missed."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Deloitte values intellectual curiosity and sharp thinking. Pick an example where your insight genuinely changed an outcome. Quantify the impact where possible.
Question 4Communication
"Tell me about a time you had to adapt your communication style to a different audience."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Consulting roles require adapting between technical and non-technical audiences — and between junior clients and C-suite. Show awareness of why the adaptation was needed, not just that you did it.
Question 5Growth mindset / Resilience
"Describe a time you received critical feedback and what you did with it."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Deloitte assesses self-awareness explicitly. Don't pick trivial feedback. Show you genuinely reflected, changed behaviour, and can articulate what you learned. This is one of the highest signal questions in the Deloitte interview.

Commercial Awareness Questions

Commercial awareness questions assess whether you understand the business environment Deloitte operates in. There are no single correct answers — interviewers reward structured thinking, genuine views, and specific knowledge over generic talking points.

Commercial Awareness Question 1
"What do you think is the biggest challenge facing the professional services industry right now?"
Strong answer framework
AI disruption and automation of advisory work, pricing pressure on audit, talent retention in a hybrid work environment, and regulatory change in financial services are all strong themes. Pick one you can discuss in depth with your own view — not just a list.
Commercial Awareness Question 2
"Why Deloitte over the other Big Four?"
Strong answer framework
Specific answers win: Deloitte's market position in technology consulting, its Monitor Deloitte strategy practice, specific industry groups, or a team's work you've researched. Generic 'culture and values' answers score poorly. Have one specific Deloitte engagement, publication, or team initiative you can reference.
Commercial Awareness Question 3
"What industry or sector would you want to work in at Deloitte, and why?"
Strong answer framework
Choose a sector you genuinely understand — not just one that sounds impressive. Be able to name 2–3 current challenges or trends in that sector, and explain how Deloitte's services are relevant to those challenges.

Technical Questions

Technical questions at Deloitte test domain knowledge relevant to the role. For consulting firms, this means frameworks and structured problem-solving. For audit and advisory, this means accounting and financial analysis concepts.

Technical Question 1Technical
"Walk me through how you'd structure a cost reduction project for a client."
Model answer
Framework: scope the problem (what costs, which business unit, what baseline?) → identify levers (people, process, procurement, real estate) → prioritise by impact and feasibility → develop implementation roadmap → measure outcomes. Deloitte interviewers reward structured thinking, not specific numerical knowledge.
Technical Question 2Technical
"A client's revenue has fallen 15% year-on-year. How would you diagnose the root cause?"
Model answer
Disaggregate: volume vs price vs mix. Then: internal factors (product changes, pricing decisions, sales force) vs external (market contraction, competition, macro). Walk through each branch. Show you'd look at data before forming a hypothesis, not form a hypothesis first. This is a mini-case.

Preparation Tips

  • Research Deloitte's specific service lines and prepare a genuine answer to 'why this service line' — not just 'why Deloitte'.
  • Read Deloitte Insights publications in your target sector before the interview — interviewers are impressed by candidates who reference Deloitte's own published thinking.
  • Prepare 6–8 strong STAR examples covering leadership, teamwork, analysis, pressure, feedback, and initiative. Each should be usable across multiple question types.
  • Know the difference between Audit, Tax, Consulting, Advisory, and Financial Advisory — Deloitte's service lines are distinct and interviewers expect you to understand what you're applying for.
  • For assessment centre: the partner interview is the most important stage. Partners assess strategic thinking and client presence — practice thinking out loud rather than delivering polished monologues.
