The Wells Fargo Hiring Process

Wells Fargo is one of the largest US banks, employing people across consumer banking branches, home lending, commercial banking, corporate and investment banking, technology and operations. The hiring process therefore varies more by role than at most employers, but most candidates move through a similar set of stages.

Check the assessments first

If your application invites you to an online assessment, complete it before preparing interview answers. Our Wells Fargo aptitude test guide explains what is covered and how to prepare.

Because process details are updated by the bank, rely on the instructions in your invitation email for dates, formats and the people you will meet.

What Wells Fargo Looks For

Wells Fargo has publicly described its values as including people as a competitive advantage, ethics, diversity and inclusion, and leadership. Interviewers use behavioural questions to test whether your examples reflect these ideas, and ethics in particular is a recurring theme.

You should also expect interviewers to be aware of the bank's 2016 sales practices scandal, in which employees opened accounts without customer consent, and of the changes to incentive structures and controls that followed. You do not need to raise it, but if asked, give a thoughtful answer: acknowledge that customer trust was damaged, explain why putting the customer first matters to you and describe how you would escalate pressure to meet targets inappropriately.

⚠️
Avoid defensive or dismissive answers

Treating a question about the bank's past as unfair, or giving a generic reply, signals poor judgement. Calm, informed and customer-focused answers are far more convincing.

Customer-Facing Role Questions (Banker & Teller)

Branch roles such as personal banker, teller and customer service representative focus on service, accuracy, integrity and the ability to recommend products responsibly. Use the STAR technique and keep examples specific.

Question 1Customer service
"Tell me about a time you helped an upset customer."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Describe the issue, how you listened without interrupting, the steps you took to resolve it and the outcome. Show empathy and ownership, and mention a follow-up if you made one. More examples appear in our customer service interview questions.
Question 2Sales with integrity
"How would you recommend a product to a customer who may not need it?"
What they're assessing & how to answer
The right answer is that you would not push it. Explain that you start by understanding the customer's needs and goals, recommend only what genuinely helps and are comfortable saying a product is not the right fit. This question directly tests whether you would resist pressure to hit targets at the customer's expense.
Question 3Accuracy
"Tell me about a time you noticed an error in your work or someone else's."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Show that you reported it promptly, corrected it and put a check in place to prevent recurrence. Interviewers value transparency over claims of never making mistakes. Related advice is in our attention to detail interview questions guide.

Corporate & Analyst Role Questions

For corporate banking, operations, risk, technology and finance positions, expect a mix of motivation, behavioural and role-specific technical questions. Investment banking analyst candidates face more finance-heavy content, which is closer to our investment banking guide than to branch interviews.

Question 4Motivation
"Why Wells Fargo, and why this division?"
What they're assessing & how to answer
Name the specific business line, such as commercial banking or home lending, explain what interests you about its clients and link it to your experience. Avoid reciting the bank's size as your main reason.
Question 5Risk and judgement
"Tell me about a time you had to follow a rule you disagreed with."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Banking is a regulated industry, so interviewers want to see that you respect controls. Show that you complied, raised your concern through the right channel and understood the purpose of the rule.
Question 6Teamwork
"Describe a project where you depended on people outside your team."
What they're assessing & how to answer
Focus on how you built relationships, communicated expectations and handled delays. Quantify the result where you can. If you need a refresher on structuring teamwork examples, see our teamwork interview questions.

Know the products

Before the interview, read about the business area you are applying to — for example checking accounts, mortgages or commercial lending — so you can discuss customers and trends fluently.

Worked STAR Answer: Responsible Selling

Candidates often struggle to make an ethics answer concrete. The example below shows the structure for a customer-facing role; replace the details with your own experience.

💡
Sample answer — “Tell me about a time you put a customer's needs ahead of a target”

Situation: In my retail job we had a monthly target for signing customers up to a store card. Task: A customer asked about the card, but from our conversation it was clear they were already struggling with existing debt. Action: I explained how the card worked, including the interest, and told them honestly that it might not suit them right now. I suggested a cheaper alternative and pointed them to our customer help information. Result: I missed one sign-up that day, but the customer returned a month later and thanked me, and my manager used the example in team training. I still met my overall target by the end of the month.

Notice what makes this work: the situation is specific, the action shows judgement rather than rule-following, and the result is honest about the cost. The same structure applies to accuracy, teamwork and pressure questions.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Claiming you have never made a mistake or faced a conflict — interviewers read this as lack of self-awareness.
  • Giving team answers that use “we” throughout, so your own contribution is unclear.
  • Describing an ethical situation but not what you actually did about it.
  • Finishing without a result, or with a result that is not measurable even loosely.
  • Ignoring the role: a branch example should sound different from a corporate analyst example.

Wells Fargo Interview FAQ

What questions does Wells Fargo ask in interviews?

Wells Fargo mainly asks behavioural questions about customer service, integrity, accuracy, teamwork and handling pressure, along with motivation questions such as why you want to work there. Corporate and analyst roles add technical questions specific to the division.

How many interviews are there at Wells Fargo?

Most roles involve a screening step followed by one to three interviews, though the number varies by position and location. Investment banking analyst candidates may face a longer block of interviews on a single day.

Does Wells Fargo use HireVue?

Wells Fargo has used on-demand video interviews such as HireVue for some roles, particularly early-career positions. Your invitation email will say whether your screening is recorded. Practise speaking to a camera and keeping answers to around two minutes.

How should I answer questions about ethics at Wells Fargo?

Answer with a real example in which you put the customer or the rules first despite pressure, explain the steps you took to escalate and describe the outcome. Show that you see ethics as part of doing the job well, not just a compliance requirement.

How do I prepare for a Wells Fargo teller or personal banker interview?

Prepare STAR examples that show customer service, cash or detail accuracy and responsible recommendations. Review basic banking products, practise a short introduction and rehearse how you would respond to an upset customer. Our bank teller interview guide includes more practice questions.
