Frequently Asked Questions

About This Numerical Reasoning Test

Each question gives you a data table or chart and asks you to calculate an answer: percentage change, ratios, currency conversions or totals. It mirrors the SHL Verify numerical test, where the challenge is reading the right figures quickly rather than doing hard maths.

Skills tested

  • ✓ Reading data tables & charts
  • ✓ Percentages and percentage change
  • ✓ Ratios and proportions
  • ✓ Currency and unit conversions
How to Approach Numerical Reasoning Questions
  1. Read the question before the table so you know which figures to look for.
  2. Estimate first: rounding often eliminates two or three options before you calculate.
  3. Watch the units in table headers (thousands, millions, %) — they are the most common trap.
  4. Cap yourself at about 45 seconds per question, then guess and move on. There is no negative marking.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many questions are in Numerical Reasoning Set 8?

Numerical Set 8 has 20 questions with a 15-minute timer — about 45 seconds per question, similar to the pace of the real SHL test.

Is this practice test free?

Yes. Every set on CareerTestPrep is free and you don't need an account. Sign up only if you want to save your scores and track progress.

Can I use a calculator on the SHL numerical test?

Yes. SHL numerical reasoning tests allow a calculator, either the on-screen one or your own. Practise with the same calculator you will use on the day.

How hard is the SHL numerical reasoning test?

Most candidates find it the hardest SHL test because of the time pressure. The maths itself is GCSE level; the difficulty is extracting the right numbers from busy tables fast.

How many numerical practice sets should I do?

Most candidates see clear gains after five to ten timed sets. Review every explanation, including the questions you got right, to pick up faster methods.
